When I photograph, my attention goes to the story first. Along with that story, I want to highlight a subject or character so that its individuality is seen. It is an interesting process figuring out with the client what the purpose of the image is, and work towards this goal during a recording. I like to capture casual moments and candid expressions. I am often drawn in by the atmosphere of a shoot which I want to translate into the finished image very purely to preserve it's authenticity. Not everyone is at ease in front of a camera, a little directing can be very helpful to let someone connect with themself. I prefer to give direction as freely as possible. In my uncommisioned work I notice that I often look for a certain nostalgia or even melancholy and want to photograph this with style. Staged stories, where an honest feeling is captured. My portfolio offers some examples of this. One of those styles is the 'noir' genre. Black and white photos shot with high-contrast lighting, belonging to an old film genre.
